In this series, I analyze job ads and break down the roles they combine into a single position. The goal? To highlight how often companies seek an impossible ‘jack of all trades’ or set employees up for burnout before they even begin.

Today’s spotlight is on a job ad from Motorola Solutions for a "Customer Insights Marketing Manager" on LinkedIn. Let’s dive in and see what’s being asked—and if it’s realistic.”:

Here is the ad:

And here the the breakdown into role inside the tool teamdecoder

Analysis:

  • the ad is very long

  • it contains many buzzwords
  • it uses different terms that might mean the same thing
  • displays complexity instead of simplicity

The person ends up with

  • more than 12 roles
  • is part of min 3 teams
  • has ownership over at least 9 domains
  • and leads the conversation with at least 3 special stakeholders

That's a lot!

20 cards instead of 1 position help everyone involved to better capture and optimize exactly what’s expected, while also simplifying the redistribution of tasks without having to shift an entire role along with the entire person.

For instance, if it’s agreed that wool is more important than eggs or milk, the candidate might even be able to cover all 20 cards. Alternatively, you may find someone who can handle 10 or 12 cards, with the remaining ones assigned elsewhere.

Role-based work works :)

Wanna try?

Best,

Kai
